Jyoti Basu confirms obstinate stand of Left on nuclear deal

The animosity between the UPA government and the apparatchiks over the Indo-US nuclear deal has reached an all-time high where from none can return and if there is any it will be equivalent to betrayal to the organizational perspective.

However, to the inner sources, the Left is in no mood to backtrack and would both go and vote against the government if the UPA remains adamant with the Indo-US nuclear deal. But if we lend ears to the recent statements of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) patriarch Jyoti Basu it would be clear that the Left, in no way, will move away from the present stand. He also made it apparent that the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wants to make the deal operational but the opposition of the Left will continue till it gets thwarted.

In this regard, he was speaking to the press and media after the completion of the state secretariat meeting of CPM at its headquarters at Alimuddin Street in Kolkata. While replying to a question he said, “The deal is being deferred since a long time now as we have not supported it. But now Manmohan Singh wants to operationalise the Indo-US nuclear deal. However, the Left partners have decided not to budge from their stand.” “As per my knowledge, nothing has been finalized about the deal. I do not know what the Centre is going to decide, and what compromises will the PM make. But we have made it clear that we would not deviate from our stand on the issue,” he added.

He was also asked of the ongoing agitation turbulence and the demand of Gorkhaland. He replied,  “It is unfortunate that they (GJM) did not participate in the all-party meeting called by chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya. But what can we do if they are not willing to participate?”
